Disaster research

Scroll

I’m currently studying a Master of Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development at the University of Newcastle.

I’m looking to better understand the relationship between narrative structure and the disaster management cycle.

My research focuses on how the media can do a better job of covering disaster and the impact of climate change, and how disaster risk reduction practitioners can use knowledge about narrative to tell better stories about their work.

I was drawn to this field after working on a number of stories about disasters, and thinking about the roles both positive and negative that news coverage and narrative have in disaster contexts.

These include:

Baseline - a podcast about the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster, and shifting baselines of risk management.

Creative Responders - a documentary series from Creative Recovery Network the unique power of the arts and creativity in disaster management, currently in its second season.

Morwell - an episode of All the Best looking at the Morwell mine fire.

Live emergency broadcast coverage of fires throughout summer broadcasting at 3AW 2010 - 2014.
